Why You Need to Choose Sustainable Perfumes

For many years, people have relied on the use of plants and other natural ingredients to concoct an array of perfumes. Studies indicate that earlier civilizations had mastered the sophisticated techniques required to extract essential oils from flowers. As time passed, commercially sold unisex perfumes made from cheap synthetic compounds began to take over the market. However, the synthetic perfume market is rapidly shifting towards green perfume or sustainable perfumes and fragrances.

Synthetic compounds are usually associated with different allergic reactions in individuals, as well as disrupting the natural hormonal system of the body. In some cases, they are likely to trigger asthma or migraines. They are also linked with environmental impact, having been shown to contaminate aquatic life and waterways. These concerns have led people to shift their focus to unisex perfumes made from natural ingredients and compounds. The industry has gradually picked up the pace, and sustainable perfumes have started to make their way into the marketplace.

What Makes a Perfume Sustainable?

To call a product a sustainable perfume, the whole process must be taken into account. Natural ingredients, the oil extraction process, and eco-friendly packaging all contribute to terming a perfume sustainable.

Is It a Challenge to Produce Sustainable Perfumes?

Challenges are a part of the sustainable unisex perfume market as it takes longer to obtain ethically-sourced natural ingredients. Different companies have cooperated to produce sustainable products to tout as part of their brands. They usually partner with other perfumers that share the same goals and ideas and are willing to put more effort into achieving their target. Usually, the product cost of an all-natural perfume is higher, but a 2017 survey showed that 19 percent of beauty consumers willing to pay the price for them (this is a 4 percent jump since 2016).

Is It Better To Go Sustainable?

The prospect of sustainable perfume production has mixed reviews. This is because synthetic ingredients act as an alternative to natural ingredients and extracted from natural sources. Some natural compounds have ceased to exist entirely or are no longer in use due to overproduction. Hence, these ingredients are synthesized to create a near-natural copy of the natural item. Some perfumers use a blend of synthetic material with natural essential oils to create well-rounded and complex unisex perfumes.

Perfume manufacturers have started to emphasize the importance of increasing production of naturally-occurring precious resources grown on a managed plantation. The goal here is to increase the production of as many natural resources for perfumes as possible, eliminating the use of potentially harmful and unnecessary synthetic materials.
